Yesterday, after my third disappointing date this week, I found myself dramatically proclaiming to my little brother and his friend that I was, “done. Like, done. Like, going to get-a-strapon-and-date-women done.” Then, I get this message from one “KnockOnWood88” asking me whether or not I’m biologically female. Ouch. Online dating seems so easy and harmless until you’re contending with all the feels on a Sunday night. My friend even made up a term to describe this emotional state; he calls it “the meeps.”
This is real talk, you guys. Online dating is hard. It’s emotional, it can be disappointing and it can also feel totally endless and overwhelming. Though I’ve certainly gotten better at dealing with its ups and downs, its attendant excitement and disappointment, it still has the capacity to reduce me to an attention-seeking pile of Sunday meeps.
I’ve learned, over the years, what works and what doesn’t work for me as far as dates go. I used to put on swoopy eyeliner every time I went on a date. Mama likes to feel sassy on a first date, and sometimes the swoop eye makes her feel a little Sophia Loren. But after sitting face to face with the evening’s date too many times and remorsefully thinking to myself, “I put on swoopy eyeliner for this?,” I developed my current no swoop policy. Now when I meet the dude and he’s ten years older and thirty-five pounds heavier than in his pictures, I at least don’t have to feel bad about how long I spent putting on eyeliner.
So, experience has helped. It also helps to learn that my dating depression is by no means uncommon. Unfortunately, dating in the age of the internet has proven that more choice can paradoxically lead to less success and satisfaction (more about that here). In this reporter’s humble opinion, dating has never been harder- or weirder. We as consumers need some guidance and some hope. At least that’s what I need right now.
And I think maybe that’s what we’re bringing to the picture with DatePerfect. Chances are you have an opinion on the matter. What is the dating space missing?
